2009-03-21 LSAT Discussion is gearing up for a potentially huge law school admissions in 2009-2010. As the economy worsens, the number of undergrads trying to ride out the slump and economic downturn in grad school increases. Thus, what is happening now in terms of law school applications is what happened in the 80s during the last economic downturn. The difference now is that there is a lot more competition for those coveted seats in top law schools.
If you're thinking about law school in 2010 and haven't taken the LSAT yet - now is the time to get on the horse and get yourself a top LSAT prep course like Morrison Media's LSAT Secrets. If you've been reading my blog for awhile, you probably realize that I recommend this product more than any other because I know it, I trust it and believe that it is the best $40 dollars or so that you will ever spend (here is another review) Anyways, please book mark this page. We're really going to be striving to share top notch tips and information on a regular basis right on this blog. 2008-12-03 The February LSAT is finally right around the corner. I haven't gotten round to publishing my specific prep tips for this exam yet. I would recommend my December LSAT prep notes as a great starting point if you're looking for a clear path to higher LSAT scores.
As I write this (December 3, 2008) interest in law school is surging. This may be the year that actually bucks the downward trend in law school applications received by ABA accredited law schools. Strangely, interest in non-ABA law schools has been surging for a long time - probably due to interest in schools like the Concord Law School and a few others. What does this all mean to law school applicants? To this observer, it means that the 2009-10 law school admissions cycle is going to be a tough, competitive journey. So get studying for the February LSAT. 2008-11-10 Preparing for the LSAT is real tough work. Recently, a product crossed my desk that makes this work just a little bit easier. The product is the LSAT Test Flashcard set from Morrison Media. I had been skeptical about the efficacy of LSAT flashcards until I got my hands on this product (retail: $46.90).
Right away, I noticed these aren't your average flash cards. You can't make these yourself on index cards. These cards are constructed on heavy duty paper, yet they retain their portability. They also contain the most up to date LSAT information I've seen. Well constructed flash cards engage you in many ways: they are visual, they force you to learn and they eschew mindless repitition with a simple shuffle - yet retain enough repitition value to actually help you remember - and these cards are no difficult. I wouldn't be suprised if they helped raise your LSAT score by at least 10 points. Thus, here in our first LSAT product review we have a winner. I give the Morrison Media flashcards 4/5 stars and a strong recommendation. For $46.90 you can't go wrong! We're talking about your future as a lawyer here! If you're thinking about taking the December LSAT, give yourself a leg up over the competition right now. 2008-10-24 I keep hearing from people that earned a 150 lsat score. Typically, they are nervous, frustrated and upset at the prospect that they won't get into any law school - anywhere. 150 is the average lsat score in the United States. In fact, the concerns of those folks writing in with that score are well founded. Nearly 40,000 lsat takers fail to get into any law school, each and every year.
Chances are you won't get into an ABA accredited law school with a 150 lsat (unless your undergrad GPA is a 3.5 or higher) - I don't mean to sound down but this is the simple reality. It is unfortunate you will judged on this exam and that it will have consquences for a long time. ***Yet*** There is hope. Are you willing to commit yourself to crafting the perfect law school application? Are you willing to leverage your life experiences, work experiences and discover your own diversity? If you answered "yes" to these questions, you are on your way to leveraging yourself and mitigating the effects of that pesky 150 lsat. The ball is in your court, and there are really just two resources out there that can help you. Both deal exclusively with helping you form the perfect application - especially if you're undergrad GPA is less than that 3.5, 3.8 level. The books are Law School Secrets and Covert Tactics For Law School Admissions I prefer Law School Secrets. It's cheaper and a faster read. You can't afford to waste another minute, so get started and good luck. 2008-10-22 I keep hearing and reading how disappointed people were with the recent October LSAT. I've heard the test was much harder than the June LSAT and that many test takers bombed the October version. With law school application deadlines looming, many are faced with the decision as to whether or not they should retake the LSAT in December or if they should proceed as is with a crappy or less than stellar LSAT.
If this describes you... read on.... First - don't despair - you're dream of becoming a lawyer can still come true. Make sure you are applying to a healthy mix of schools - some Tier 1 schools, some Tier 2 schools and some Tier 3 schools (depending on how mediocre your score is) and also make sure your application is in as early as possible (NOW!). If you're LSAT and/or undergrad GPA are less than stellar - consider buying one of the internet guides to improving your chances. Check out Covert Tactics or Law School Secrets Both will help you leverage your background and gain admission by saying all the right things in your application. If you decide to go it alone - be sure all your application materials are absolutely perfect and are fully completed. Your application has to be on the top of the pile. 2008-10-14 I often get asked "What Is The Best LSAT Prep Program?"
My answer is always the same. Don't spend tons of money on an expensive class or hundreds of dollars on multiple books. Your biggest investment needs to come in the form of time! Can you spend 2-3 hours per day over the course of 2 months in order to dedicate yourself to learning the LSAT? Mastering the LSAT isn't about memorization or repitition - it's about learning the the methodologies that underpin the exam. These are easy to learn and master - and any quality book will teach you how to understand these methodologies when you are taking the test. Stay tuned, and arm yourself with a good guide book (see our sponsor below!) and together over the days and weeks leading to the December LSAT will get talking specifics! 2008-10-13 Welcome to the future home of the LSAT Discussion site.
